It was disappointing. You had always thought that you were special to him – he had loved spending time with you, taking you out of the house. You had visited different things, most of the time zoos, parks or you went hiking. You loved exploring new areas, so you had been excited every time he mentioned a new possible excursion destination you would visit the next time.
It had depended whether you had been in school or university – after all, you had been together since the upper classes. You had been scared, honestly, you had expected that he would break up as soon as you left the school, but he hadn't. You had spent two more years together – two wonderful years. You had enjoyed every single day of it, although both of you had studied in different universities. Sometimes it had been difficult, but you had always handled those moments.

And now? Now everything was over. You weren't even sure why he broke up. You had been happy, there had been no reason for the two of you to break up – you had thought that at least. You closed your eyes, leaning back against the wall and staring through the window. You weren't that used to this area, after all you visited your brother only once or twice per year. Sadly as you should add – you liked him. He was the one who could easily cheer you up, having taken care of you for years before you finally moved to another city. It was your luck and bad-luck in one that you had your semester break. Now you had free time to spend – too much time to think about him. You missed him, you wanted to be in his arms...
“You know, it won't get better by staring outside, (y/n), do you? You could come along to the carnival party this evening!” The voice of your brother made you look up. You raised one eyebrow, sighing soundlessly. “Carnival. Disguising... doesn't sound like something for me.”, you muttered, getting onto your feet and stretching yourself. Exploring, yes, but carnival...? Your birthday was always around the carnival days, easily forgotten by others. That's why you were visiting your brother – he wanted to cheer you up and celebrate with you. Carnival hadn't been involved in his plans, but oh well.
“Oh, I'm sure you won't regret coming with me. Shachi and Penguin will be there as well. You remember those two dorks?”, he wanted to know with an awry grin. You hesitated, blinking a few times. Two dorks? Thinking back when you last visited your brother, you hummed.
“Uhm... those two who came along last year? I think I remember them. One red-haired man with sunglasses and the other wore a strange cap, didn't he?”
Your brother chuckled lightly, nodding afterwards. “Exactly. They tried to flirt with you at first~”, he smirked, making you roll your eyes, but soon you giggled lightly.
“Oh... yeah. Those two... not only that I've been in a relation back then, but how they tried to flirt with me.... Funny, but embarrassing.”, you hummed amused, shaking your head.
“Yes~ I bet Law won't come along. As usual...”, he sighed, rubbing the back of his head. “Ah, well... so, you come along, don't you? I bet you'll find a great costume!”
How easily you had been convinced... yeah, you needed the distraction. So, why not come along?
“...I bet... not. Around two or three hours left and I need a complete costume. I'll probably need your clothes.”
“Oh, no problem. I know what I'll be wearing. You can take whatever you want~”, he offered chuckling, completely ignoring your eye-rolling.
“Fine, fine... when do we go?”, you murmured, already thinking about the clothes you brought with you as well as the ones that should still be here.
“Around five o'clock. We need about twenty minutes to get there – and we want to be early, don't we?~”, he mused, ruffling your hair with a grin. Your annoyed look made him laugh, before he turned around. “Naw. I better leave you alone now. Take your time, I'll be waiting for you.”
You huffed, shaking your head. “Yeah, yeah...”

~*~

Creativity wasn't your strength – but it obviously wasn't your weakness as well. You starred into the mirror, tilting your head a bit. It had been quite a help, having looked into the wardrobe of your brother and his carnival collections. You had discovered a mask, only covering eyes and nose. It was black, purple glittering with feathers glued to both sides. Combining it with an older violet dress – it only reached the middle of your thighs, had lace around the neckline as well as a small belt with sequins. That combined with long black gloves, simple tights and plain black knee-high boots seemed to fit – at least it was close to a costume. Makeup? Maybe a tiny little bit, but since you didn't plan on putting your mask off, you wouldn't need it.
You nodded to yourself, turning around to return to your room and look for some jewelry. Maybe a necklace or some hair clasps. You loved collars and chokers, so there should be something that would fit. It was the only kind of jewelry you were almost collecting. You rummaged around your suitcase, soon pulling out a silver box and opening it. Taking a thin black choker with an amethyst pendant, you hummed happily, putting it on afterwards.
But... what about your hair? Your (h/c) mane? You grumbled lightly, taking a look around your room and finally staring at your old desk. When you had been younger, you had been used to wear hairbands or hair circlets once or twice a week. You would look there – either you found something or not.

It had taken you over an hour to get your costume finished. You had no clue what exactly you were – but that was fine. If there would be anyone who knew you except for your brother, they wouldn't recognize you immediately. You hummed in approval, leaving your room and heading downstairs, almost falling down, having tripped because of nothing. Grumbling, you rolled your eyes, heading towards the living room.
“I think I'm in time, aren't I, (b/n)?” He flinched, turning around and staring at you for a few seconds.
“Yeah... you are. Uhm. Mind helping me with the makeup...?”, he hesitantly wanted to know, smiling awkwardly at you. “Oh, you look great by the way!”
You eyed him skeptically, only to laugh afterwards. He looked like some were-wolf – but his face was a mess. Whatever he had tried to draw had completely gone wrong. You couldn't help laughing because of this, before you finally calmed down and went over to him, taking the pens and brushes from him. “You could go like that, wolfie~ They wouldn't laugh because of you~”, you teased chuckling, pointing at the armchair. “What exactly do you want? Take a seat and I'll try to get it done.”, you smiled. “And next time, you should use a mask. That's ways easier~”, you added humming. It took a few minutes to clean his face and paint it the way he wanted – you were no artist, but it looked ways better than his tries.
“Hah~ finally. So,  I guess we can go now. Thanks, sis!~”, he happily chimed, getting up as soon as you were done. He wouldn't need a coat with the costume he was wearing while you grabbed your coat, putting it on and closing it completely.
“I think so. Lead the way, (b/n).”, you murmured calmly. Now you were getting kind of restless and nervous. Great. Going to some carnival party – the best idea your brother ever had. You shook your head lightly, following him outside. You should stop thinking pessimistically. Definitely. That made everything worse!

~*~

It took you almost half an hour, reaching the local festival hall. To be honest, you had expected to be too late. Your brother had planned to arrive at about half past five, but now it was almost six o'clock. Seeing that many people made you feel uncomfortably immediately, unknowingly leaning a bit against your brother. Damn. You weren't fond of crowds, so why the hell were you here?
“Calm down, everything's okay. I'm a bit confused though... shouldn't it be a bit faster...?”, he murmured calmly, narrowing his eyebrows. Slowly, he shook his head, grabbing your wrist and pulling you along. “So, let's go and ask Robin.”, he hummed, passing the other disguised people. It was obvious that they weren't happy about the fact that you shoved – obviously, seeing all those annoyed looks. Ignore it... just ignore it...
You stopped next to your brother as you arrived at the end of the line. “Hey, Robin, what's going on here? How comes you're alone? Shouldn't there be... more?”, he wanted to know, one eyebrow raised, looking at the empty counter.
The black-haired woman, dressed as a dark angel, smirked lightly, nodding afterwards. “Usually, Nami would have helped today, but she got ill and they found no replacement. So I'm responsible for all the guests.”, she explained calmly, sighing afterwards. “And if you don't want to be killed, you should hurry up and pay. Otherwise, you could get problems, (b/n).”, she added with a smile.
“Ah, yeah. Sure, sorry!”, he laughed sheepishly, having paused for a second.
“I could help you, Robin.”, you quietly offered after a short moment, earning a surprised look from your brother.
“But (y/n), didn't you...”, he stopped, looking from you to Robin and back to you, before he pouted a bit.
“...well, why not? If you've got no problems with annoyed people who have the desire to kill all of us who delay everything...”, she replied, still that unsettling smile on her lips.
You blinked a few times, grimacing a bit. Well... selling tickets was probably better than standing inside the hall without having a real reason to be there. Sure, your brother wanted you to be here, but... You knew how it would end – your brother and his friends would drink a lot, talking about everything while you would be the unremarkable wallflower.

~*~

It wasn't difficult. Greeting those who were next, checking their identity card and selling the tickets afterwards. To be precise, you had to place a green, yellow or red paper wristband at their hands, depending on their age. At the beginning, it had been a bit stressful because everybody wanted to get inside as soon as possible. Easy to understand – music was playing, they were selling drinks and some snacks there. Furthermore, waiting was annoying if you wanted to do something – celebrate, dance, whatever.
As soon as it got calmer, it was quite nice. Sure, some guests were up for conflicts, but most of the time, Robin helped you. She was sitting right opposite to you after all, keeping her calm smile. It was easy to tell whether she knew the guests or not, especially one younger black-haired male who had almost cuddled her as a greeting. Not that you would interrupt her and her friends.

You didn't know what time it was when the friends of your brother entered. You didn't recognize them directly, the two grinning dorks, one being dressed as some bloody mummy, the other one as a wizard, because they were accompanied by another black-haired male. Some vampire doctor who seemed to be pretty annoyed. The moment they stopped in front of you, you smiled lightly. You knew their voices – you wouldn't mistake them.
“Aw, why are all the beautiful faces hidden behind masks today?”, Shachi complained playfully as he pulled out his wallet. You blinked, before a slight smile appeared on your lips.
“Because some of them want to make men curious – or because for once, they want to go unrecognized.”, you hummed amused, chuckling lightly as you could see his confused look.
“What's your reason...?”, he hesitantly added, narrowing his eyebrows. He was thinking – he probably tried to remember why you were familiar to him.
“The second one, Shachi. I don't need your or Penguin's identity card, but your grumpy vampire's one.”, you gave back smirking. Mentioned black-haired narrowed his eyebrows irritated, grabbing his own wallet.
“You... who are you?” Penguin seemed confused as well, taking a step aside so his friend could step forward.
“Oh, take a guess. You should know me although it has been a year or so that you saw me the last time.”, you sighed, tilting your head a bit.
“Eh, uhm... give me a second!”, Shachi exclaimed, making you laugh lightly.
“Could we just get it over with? (b/n)'s probably waiting already.” You threw a short look at the raven-haired who gave you his identity card, his eyebrows narrowed annoyed.
“I bet he is.”, you chuckled, throwing a short look at Shachi and Penguin who changed a fast look, eyes widened in surprise, before they called your name simultaneously, making Law stare at them.
“Took some time, huh?~”, you teased, taking their money, before you put the wristbands around their wrists.
“It did, sorry. How comes you're helping here? Shouldn't you be, I don't know, with your brother?” Penguin's question made you tilt your head, shrugging your shoulders afterwards. “I could be. I decided to help Robin. It wasn't planned that I would come along with you guys either, was it?”
“Doesn't matter! I bet it would be funny.”, Shachi grinned. “Ah, and that's a nice mask. Was kinda hard to recognize you.”
You smiled at him, nodding lightly. “Thanks, that was the plan behind that costume.”
“But you don't need to hide your beauty!” Penguin's comment made you blink, shaking your head lightly, although you chuckled as Shachi hit him.
“You know she has a friend!” “I know, I know! But I'm just being honest. He won't kill me for that, will he?”
“Oh guys...”, you chuckled, shaking your head again. “You shouldn't keep my brother waiting, so I suppose you enter now, yeah?”
They exchanged a quick look, nodding afterwards. “Yeah, right. Enjoy your time, (y/n), maybe we'll come around later.” You simply smiled because of that, watching them leave, before you took a deep breath. You grimaced, being remembered of your broken relationship was the last thing you had needed this evening. Well, how could they know? You slowly shook your head, leaning back. You just wouldn't think about it anymore. Hopefully, that would work somehow.

~*~

The time passed. You didn't realize it at the beginning, but it seemed like most of the guests were here, so you weren't really needed anymore. The moment Robin talked to you, you flinched in surprise, having been caught deep in thoughts.
“I think I can handle the rest by myself. You can go and search your brother, (y/n), don't you think?”, she suggested, making you blink a few times. Uh, you weren't sure if that was a good idea, but fine, maybe that was better than sitting around all the time.
“Uh, why not. If it's okay for you.”, you replied with a small smile, getting up.
“It's fine. Thanks for your help.” She nodded, pointing you to leave. You hummed in approval, sighing soundlessly, before you entered the big hall. It was terribly loud in there. Music was playing and people were talking, a few were sitting in the seating area while others were dancing or buying something to eat or drink. You weren't sure where you should go to since you had no clue what your brother was doing. Maybe you would take a quick look around the areas and leave if you weren't able to find him.

Stepping closer to the seating area, you sighed. He wasn't dancing, unlike his two friends – something that didn't surprise you, but instead of asking them, you just went on. You didn't really want to disturb them.
“Oh, (y/n)! Finally done, huh?” You almost jumped startled, turning around to stare at your brother. He grinned lopsidedly, walking over to you. “I wanted to come to you~ but that makes it even better!”, he smiled, handing you a filled glass. “Want some cocktail, sis?”
“Eh... depends, what cocktail is that?”, you wanted to know calmly, eyeing the blue liquid skeptically, only making him chuckle. Oh, okay. It was obvious that he had already drunk more than one cocktail – and seeing the yellow-orange one in his other hand made it clear that he would keep on drinking.
“Just a simple Swimming pool. I could bring you a stronger one, though~”, he hummed, raising his glass. “Come on, drink something. I bet you're thirsty!”, he insisted, making you sigh.
Thirsty? Yeah. But usually, you would prefer something non-alcoholic to drink if you were thirsty. You touched glasses, taking a sip. You liked this kind of cocktails – but you weren't in the mood for drinking.
“So, come on, sis! Have some fun~”, he smiled widely. “We could go to Law! I bet he doesn't enjoy this evening as well!~”
Luckily, you expected him grabbing your wrist and pulling you along, so you could watch out that you didn't let your glass fall. “Watch out, okay?”, you muttered, as you followed him.
“So, where's Mr. Grumpy... He didn't leave yet, did he?”, your brother mused, looking around. You weren't surprised as he bumped into someone, almost spilling his cocktail on the man.
“Hey, idiot! Got no eyes or what?”, he sounded annoyed, clenching his fist.
“Sorry, dude! I was just looking for someone!~”, your brother sheepishly replied, rubbing the back of his head. “Didn't pay attention.”
“Yeah, obviously.” He growled, grabbing your brother's collar, pulling him closer. “What stops me from smashing your face in?”, he huffed.
The next moment, you stepped forward, grabbing his wrist. “Me. Please stop it. He won't do it again.”, you calmly stated. “How about we pay some beverage for you?”
The red-haired stared at you for some moments, before he huffed. “Fine. I could need some more with certain jerks around...”, he growled, pointing at the bar.
“I believe you do... hey, (b/n), look for your friend. I'll get him something...”, you ordered tiredly, walking over to the counter. He followed you, ordering some stronger cocktail. You paid it, turning to him and tilting your head lightly.
“So... it's okay now, right? Enjoy your drink, I'll... go and watch out that this jerk brother won't run into more trouble...”
He hummed, shaking his head afterwards. “Well, good luck with that.”

Luck...? Something you were obviously lacking this evening. You had left the red-haired man, turning around to search for your brother, but you soon found something or rather someone you weren't looking for. You had taken a few steps back to the seating area, but it was no use. He was nowhere to be seen and by now, you were tired and exhausted. The loud music was going on your nerves as well, so you wanted to leave. You stared at your own cocktail, taking another sip and turning around in order to leave the room, freezing only a few seconds afterwards.
He was here. He, the one you loved, was here – with another woman. He was a few steps away, an arm around the small blonde. They were talking with someone. You could see his face, but he obviously couldn't see you. You clenched your fists, staring at them with disbelief. You weren't sure what you should feel. It was a weird mixture.
Slowly, you took some steps closer. You weren't sure why – but you felt like it. Closer and closer, before you froze again. Your brother? Why was he talking with them...? You blinked, now feeling the urge to turn around and run away. Not that you could – your brother had recognized you, waving you. You didn't want to come closer, feeling like some ice sculpture inside. Slowly you went over to him, stopping next to him.
“Sis, hey sis! That's Shareena, a former classmate from my college! I haven't seen her for ages!”, he happily exclaimed, clapping his hands once. “And that's Kilian, her boyfriend. They've been together for... eh, how long did you say...?”
The blonde woman chuckled amused, shaking her head. “Half a year, you dummy.”, she grinned, leaning her head against Kilian's arm. The taller man laughed as well, making you flinch lightly. It was him. Him. He... had another woman. If they had been together for half a year... he had betrayed you. He didn't just break up, but he had lied to you as well.
It hurt. Like something cold had been rammed through your heart. Why had your brother called you here...? Was he really that dumb to not realize what he did to you? Was he really that drunk already...?
Not that it really mattered to you. The fact that the man you loved had been in another relationship without you knowing it... it shocked you. It depressed you. You didn't realize how tears were slowly building in your eyes.
“It's nice to meet (b/n)'s beloved sister. What's your name, sweetheart?” She offered a hand, smiling friendly. You stared at it for a few seconds, only hesitantly grabbing and shaking it weakly.
“I, uh... can't really give that back... sorry.”, you muttered, lowering your head. “And I think it's better not telling you my name...”, you added, before you finally turned around and quickly left. You've had enough, more than enough.
Hey there!~

Uhm. I mentioned I had a new idea, right...? Concerning carnival...? Yeah, it's long over by now, but... I didn't manage to finish this part earlier ._.

Well, here's part one. If I think about it... I wanted to write a oneshot, but truth be told: it was obvious that it would end as some short story. There's too much to write~ Guess this will have about... five parts? And yeah, Law might be a bit missing at the beginning, but everything has to start somehow~ And since I chose that kind, it... had to be like that ^-^''

Ah, I really hope you like this part. The second will be uploaded the next days c: It's almost finished~

Hope you have a nice day!~

Read you guys c:
